imperial college london application
Applications will be considered from candidates
already possessing the qualifications prescribed for entrance,
and from those who expect, through examinations taken before
the degree course commences, to satisfy the entrance requirements.
Candidates will be required to have satisfied both the College
general entrance requirements and the course requirements
prescribed for admission to their chosen degree course, normally
through passes in a recognised General Certificate of Education
examination. Students entering the School of Medicine must
have reached the age of 18 by 1 October in the year of entry.
This is due to the pattern of delivery which requires compliance
with patient contact regulations in the first term.
The minimum general entrance requirements prescribed by the
College are passes in a recognised General Certificate of
Education examination either in:
two subjects at A level, or
in one subject at A level and two subjects at AS level, or
in four subjects at AS level.
All candidates must have a minimum English language qualification
of at least grade C at GCSE or other equivalent qualification.
At least grade B in English language at GCSE level is normally
required for admission to the medical course. For details
of acceptable English language qualifications, and the minimum
grades required by the College, please go to the English language
test website.
Except for courses where three specific A level subjects are
required for admission, candidates offering two A levels together
with two AS levels will normally be considered equally with
candidates offering three A levels. Combinations including
at least one AS level contrasting with other A and AS level
subjects will be accepted and, in many cases, actively encouraged.
Details of the minimum course requirements are given for each
department separately in the academic sections.
Other qualifications
Information about the acceptability of a wide range of alternative
qualifications can be found via the Course Search facility
on the UCAS website. Candidates who are in any doubt about
the acceptability of their qualifications should write to
registry.advice@imperial.ac.uk giving details of subjects
passed and to be taken.
The College considers applications for entry to the second
year of some (but not all) of its courses. All such applications
must be made via UCAS. Selectors would look for the successful
completion of the first year of a comparable degree course
at another higher education institution with a high level
of achievement. In addition, selectors would look for the
fulfilment of the standard first year entry requirements.
Candidates wishing to apply for admission to the second year
should contact the relevant department directly, giving full
details of their current course and their academic background
before making an application.
Advanced Engineering Diploma
The present restriction on the Additional Specialist Learning
element to the equivalent of 1.5 A levels means that the proposed
Advanced Engineering Diploma does not contain sufficient academic
content to demonstrate that Diploma award holders could cope
with the academic requirements of our engineering courses.
Thus, the Advanced Engineering Diploma as currently defined
does not by itself provide a normal entry route to our engineering
courses. However, we may consider candidates with both the
Diploma and A Levels in specified subjects which meet our
entrance requirements.
Pre-university experience
The College welcomes applications for admission in October
2011 submitted a year in advance by candidates who wish to
spend a year after leaving school either gaining valuable
experience in industry or perhaps engaged in some form of
social work at home or overseas. College tutors are pleased
to advise students considering deferring their entry to College.
In certain engineering departments a year of relevant industrial
experience is particularly favoured.
Candidates who are undecided as to whether they will wish
to defer their entry for one year should apply in the normal
way for admission in October 2010. If the application is successful,
the College can, if the student so requests, offer admission
for 2011 instead of 2010. A conditional offer made in such
circumstances would, however, be contingent on the satisfaction
of all the conditions of the offer not later than 31 August
2010.
Admissions appeals and complaints procedure
The College strives to treat all applications fairly and without
prejudice. However, if a candidate is not satisfied with the
way in which an application has been considered or wishes
to appeal against the decision of the College, they should
follow the guidance provided in the College Admissions Appeals
and Complaints Procedure.
Entrance tests for 2010 entry and deferred entry in
2011
Undergraduate Medicine (MBBS/BSc), BSc Biomedical Science,
BSc Pharmacology and Translational Medical Science: all applicants
will be required to sit the BMAT test.
Graduate-entry Medicine (MBBS): all applicants are required
to sit UKCAT.
All other courses: applicants in 2010 entry round including
those who then defer entry until 2011 will not be required
to sit an entrance test.
Students with disabilities
The College welcomes applications from students with special
needs. Those with disabilities are recommended to contact
the College as early as possible before submitting their application
form, indicating the course or courses in which they are interested
and the nature of their disability.
It is important that the College knows about the extent of
disability in advance, because access to, and the physical
arrangements within, some of our buildings may present difficulties.
In addition, the College considers it important to advise
students of what facilities are available before they submit
an application. The College wishes to offer as much assistance
as possible and is making continued efforts to improve access.
The College's policy is to view applications from students
with special needs on the same academic grounds that apply
to all applicants.
The College's Disabilities Advisors cater for the needs of
students with disabilities. They have responsibility for access
and accommodation and work closely with the Registry, the
Student Accommodation Centre, the academic departments and
outside agencies. They are available to discuss, on a confidential
basis, any issues of concern to people with disabilities whilst
at the College.
The Disabilities Advisors are aware of the requirements of
dyslexic students and advise departments as necessary on this
learning difficulty.
Students with dyslexia and those who think they may have a
learning disability are strongly advised to ensure they have
a full psychological assessment report before they start their
course. This must be written by a qualified educational psychologist
after the student has reached 16 years of age, and no more
than 10 years before the date of entry to the College. Otherwise
it is likely that the College will require a review assessment
to be undertaken. The College cannot consider any special
provisions for students without a full assessment of the student's
needs. Details of the criteria to be covered in the report
can be obtained from the Disabilities Advisors. Students who
wish the College to consider special provision for their learning
disability should contact the Disabilities Advisors as soon
as possible, so that help can be provided from the start of
the course. Students should be aware that it is unlikely that
any examination compensation will be allowed unless they have
previously contacted the Disabilities Advisors and agreed
arrangements with both the Disabilities Advisors and their
academic department.
In accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995,
a copy of Imperial College London's disability statement describing
the facilities offered is available in ordinary or large print.
Should a Braille or taped version be required this can also
be arranged.

Admission of students with other competencies
Although passes in the requisite GCSE, O level and A level
examinations of the General Certificate of Education represent
an almost indispensable background to the courses offered
by Imperial College London, applications will be welcomed
from suitably motivated and experienced candidates who can
demonstrate the required competencies but do not possess the
usual qualifying examinations.
Admission of occasional students
Candidates may be permitted as occasional students to attend
a course, or certain parts of a course, provided that they
are able to show that they have the necessary preliminary
knowledge, and that there is sufficient space for them. Occasional
students are not registered for any qualifications. All candidates
wishing to be considered as an occasional student must apply
online.
